I can climb the mountain – a helpful exercise for children with anxiety

This helpful exercise for children with anxiety helps them to see that they can overcome challenges and worries by breaking tasks or projects up into smaller, more do-able steps.
Play therapist Lenka de Villiers-van Zyl has helped me to develop this activity to assist children who struggle with anxiety. This activity can be used on its own, or as an additional resource with our picture book about anxiety, What if worries weren't wild? / Hoe om kommer-goggas mak te maak.
Why this activity is helpful
Lenka explains her thoughts about the activity as follows:
"This helpful exercise for children with anxiety helps children realize that they can overcome challenges and worries by breaking it up into smaller, more do-able steps. In this way, a problem seems less overwhelming and daunting, and children can gain a sense of control over their fears by mastering one small step at a time with the help of a trusted adult.
In this way, their confidence in handling problems will grow, and they will learn from a young age to approach challenges and obstacles in this practical way."
